Australia – a Federation
1642, Abel Tasman found Tasmania if he stayed we all would be speaking Dutch!
1770, James Cook, took a big chunk of Australia for Britain.
Before federation, WA, NT, SA, NSW, VIC, QLD were all different colonies and they were sort of like different countries but Britain is the big boss. This is obviously since European settlement. Aboriginals had their own tribes, culture and regions.
Back then you couldn’t travel from Brisbane to Melbourne because the train tracks were different widths. After a while the colonies started to think they could join together because for one thing, if they did, they could make bigger army’s with more defense.
But the colonies still had suspicions about each other. The colonies with the most people (VIC and NSW) were worried they would have to pay to the smaller poorer colonies but the smaller ones were worried that NSW and VIC had too much wealth and power. It happened in America as well but ended up much worse so now there’s America and Canada. But for us it went with no wars. They first decided to have the same number of senators. So the colonies weren’t out numbered.
But on July the ninth 1900, Britain decided to leave the 6 colonies, (and make Country!!!) and then on January the first 1901, the 6 colonies formed the common wealth of Australia! ACT and Northern Territory were added later. But it wasn’t all fun and happiness, Woman couldn’t vote in federal elections till 1902, and Aboriginals couldn’t vote until 1962, and they weren’t counted in the census until 1971.
We are bettering off united as a country than 6 different states divided.
